Personlig udvikling under et efterskoleophold

Jeg snakkede for nyligt med en samarbejdspartner på et projekt. Han ville ikke være tilgængelig i løbet af den næste uges tid, da hans søn kom hjem fra efterskole. Jeg spurgte, hvordan det var gået med dette ophold og fik et rigtigt godt citat smidt tilbage i hovedet: “Vi sendte en dreng ind og fik en mand tilbage”.

Dette er ikke et enkeltstående tilfælde.

Jeg har stadigt til gode at høre om et tilfælde, hvor et barn var på efterskole og ikke var modnet markant, da barnet igen kom hjem. Ovenstående tilfælde var tilmed en dreng. Drenge er, som vi alle jo ved, en tand bagud i forhold til piger på udviklingsskalaen, og resultatet må derfor her havde været endnu større ved et år på efterskolen.

Et år væk fra forældrene

Første gang den nye elev ankommer til efterskolen, kan det hele føles meget uoverskueligt. Et år væk fra forældrene er ikke nogen nem ting. Min samarbejdspartner fortalte om, hvordan deres dreng i de første par måneder havde problemer med hjemve – men det hele løste sig selv efter et par måneder, da et par af hans venner på efterskolen gik fra blot at være venner til at være rigtigt gode venner.

Sådan er det med efterskolen: ligesom tilfældet er med gymnasiet, formes der her venskaber for livet. At venskaber formet på efterskoler er stærkt var jeg også vidne til, da jeg selv var elev på et gymnasium.

Det var ikke unormalt, at der årligt blev holdt en genforening for de, der havde gået på efterskoler rundt omkring i landet, og op til flere uger før dette, havde de tidligere efterskolegangere svært ved at snakke om andet. Hvor meget de glædede sig til at se deres venner igen, snakke om tiden på efterskolen, ja endda at se deres lærere igen. Specielle bånd formes på en efterskole og et barn modnes på et niveau umuligt at opnå andre steder.

Ikke et andet barn, men et modnet barn

Min omtalte samarbejdspartner følte næsten, at han havde fået et andet barn igen efter turen på efterskolen. Selvom det helt sikkert også er set før, tvivler jeg på, at det er normen i forhold til efterskoler – at man helt føler, man har fået en andens barn hjem igen.

Vel nok får man et modnet barn, der i højere grad vil være i stand til at tage ansvar for egen situation og indgå i det daglige liv med ansvarlighed og pligtopfyldelse. Men det er nu og engang stadigt den samme person – der nu blot har fået en forståelse for, hvorfor vasketøjet skal hænges op, opvasken skal tages og værelset skal ryddes!

I øvrigt vil modningen af barnet på en efterskole foregå gradvist. I ferier, til jul og i weekender fra tid til anden vil barnet naturligvis stadigt komme hjem til forældrene, og der var derfor ikke tale om et “chok” fra den ene dag til den anden.

Et efterskoleophold er en fantastisk oplevelse som følge af så mange grunde, at vi slet ikke kan nævne dem alle her. Og de er med til at modne barnet. Som min partner sagde: Vi sendte en dreng ind og fik en mand tilbage!
